A Motorcyclist’s Journey to the San Juan Mtns
There’s something magical about cruising on two wheels, where the journey itself becomes the destination. My recent ride along the San Juan Skyway, especially the stretch between Cortez and Telluride in Colorado, was an exhilarating testament to this.
Starting in Cortez, a quaint town rich in Native American history, I revved up my engine, eager for the adventure ahead. The road from Cortez to Telluride is a biker’s paradise. It’s not just the destination; it’s the incredible journey that gets your heart racing.
The Diverse Terrain: A Kaleidoscope of Nature
As I ascended on my bike, the landscape transformed dramatically. The San Juan Skyway is like a canvas painted by nature itself. From the arid, desert-like conditions near Cortez, the road gradually welcomed me with lush greenery and alpine forests as I neared Telluride. The sharp contrast in the terrain was a vivid reminder of nature’s diversity.
The skyway winds through the heart of the San Juan Mountains, offering a challenging yet rewarding ride. Sharp turns and steep inclines are a thrilling test of skill, but it’s essential to ride cautiously, respecting the road and its surprises.
The Historic Town of Telluride
As you approach Telluride, the landscape softens, with the towering mountains giving way to a more serene setting. This historic mining town, nestled in a box canyon, is the perfect place to rest and explore. The streets are lined with colorful Victorian-era buildings, now housing a variety of shops and eateries.
Must-Stop Views: Breathtaking Beauty
- Lizard Head Pass: One of the most spectacular viewpoints along this route is Lizard Head Pass. Situated at over 10,000 feet, it offers panoramic views of the surrounding peaks. The view here, with towering peaks in the backdrop, is nothing short of breathtaking. It’s a great spot to stretch your legs and take in the beauty.
- Dolores River Canyon: Another unimaginable view is the Dolores River Canyon. The overlook provides a stunning panorama of the river snaking through the canyon, a sight that’s both serene and majestic.

Culinary Delights on the Road
- Cortez: Before embarking, I grabbed a hearty breakfast at a local diner in Cortez. The town may be small, but it’s big on flavor, offering classic American fare that’s perfect for fueling a long ride. I recommend grabbing a hearty breakfast at the Loungin’ Lizard, a local favorite known for its generous portions.
- Telluride: Once in Telluride, I treated myself to a well-deserved gourmet meal. This charming mountain town boasts an array of eateries, from cozy cafes to upscale restaurants, catering to every palate. For a quick bite, check out Brown Dog Pizza, a local favorite known for its delicious Detroit-style pizza.
